Rom Manager and what it means for the Pantech Burst

So you've gone and downloaded Clockworkmod's Rom Manager and your wondering,
"I've got a Pantech Burst that I just rooted and I wonder what Rom Manager can do for me"

Well Look no further!

The Pantech Burst recently got a working recovery setup in Clockworkmod's Recovery builder so now we can churn out the newest release as soon as it comes out and have it ready for all you wonderful Burst owners!  I've tested the latest release v6.0.1.4 (both touch and non) and so far they work great!  I've also started collecting several modified stock roms people have been building and uploaded them to the Rom Manager's Rom database so you can download and install straight from rom manager!

First thing first, you need to make sure your Pantech Burst is rooted.
Second, make sure if you haven't already download and install the latest CWM Recovery as it will be required to install roms from Rom Manager.
Third, feel free to browse around the roms available in rom manager.  also if you have a rom's update.zip on your sd card you can chose "install from sd card and select the zip file"

As of the time of this entry there are 2 modified stock roms available in the CWM Rom Database.  I'm currently downloading one of them and will perform an install test to make sure everything is working correctly.

I'm currently running with the locked bootloader caused from a stock ICS upgrade.  I will also later try this same procedure from one with the unlocked bootloader (fresh GB install or one that was downgraded with the original pdl file)

Updates to follow.....

**Downloaded with no issue.  Gave me the option if I wanted to install now.  When I selected yes it asked if I wanted to perform a backup, factory reset, and wipe davlik and I chose yes to all 3.  When the phone rebooted though there was an error.  and I've posted the error log here .  it looks like Rom manager is saving to the "internal sd" and the CWM is trying to read it from the external sd so its not getting the commands or the file to be installed.  Will update again if we have any updates.  cwm can still be used in the mean time if you download a rom to your external sd and install it from cwm.**

**Do not do this if you have installed the stock ICS update with the pantech software as your bootloader is locked and you will brick**

CWM for Pantech Burst/Presto now on Rom Manger

CWM Recovery both Touch and non touch versions are now on rom manager!

non touch is a free download but the touch version if you manually download it from clockworkmod.com and install is free but to install through Rom manager it will cost you a little.

What a letdown

So its Tuesday October 2nd......and still no new information.  I wish I could atleast share something like a time frame when they planned on updating us on the status next but nothing.  and from what it sounds like not only are they keeping us the consumers in the dark but also their own customer service support staff.  they will only find out anything about 2 hours before we do on facebook/twitter.  I will keep checking and hopefully with be able to post something hopeful and upbeat soon.  Until then...

Pantech Burst ICS Update Download

323pm EST (the following day 9/28/12):  still no word from pantech.  Was really hoping to see what a difference the ICS update would make on the phone this weekend as well as downloading the source for the kernel and start compiling for a CM9 port.  Not sure about everyone else but I feel kinda let down by this and hope it doesn't ruin my or anyone else's weekend.  I think I will go ahead and end this post and make a new one when pantech finally gets around to giving us any new info

1029pm EST:  Checked facebook/pantech's website/and twitter and neither the update or kernel source have been posted anywhere.

620pm EST:  Pantech posted the following on their facebook page.

  • We are experiencing some unexpected delays with the Burst ICS update, but engineers are resolving them now. More news coming soon. Thanks so much for your patience.

220pm EST:  So we're all still waiting and still wondering what exactly is going on.  Pantech hasnt released any official statements so all we are going on is several people who state they called in to Pantech's customer support and are giving assorted responses.  Here are some of the images people have been posting on Pantech USA's facebook wall:

1040am EST:  I've been checking the following non stop:
Still no word or mysterious download link.  Once I see it ready for download I will post the link up here as well as upload it to dropbox and post that as a mirror.

If only "Triangle shows on screen" let go of all buttons and press home once and recovery should be there.

For fastboot:
Hold "Menu Button" + "Volume Up" + "Power"

Root your Pantech Element

Like with the Burst, the process is ridiculously easy. In order to root the device, however, you'll need a couple of things:
Once you have that taken care of, navigate to where you downloaded CWM and the insecure boot image, extract the folder, and launch a command prompt (shift+ right click > open command window hereNote: this doesn't work in Windows 7's libraries - you must be in the actual folder). Once you've done that, execute the following commands with the device plugged into your PC:
  • adb reboot bootloader
  • fastboot flash recovery cwm-
  • fasboot flash boot element-boot-insecure.img
  • fastboot reboot
After that, just install SU from the Play Store (or grab the flashable version from here and flash in CWM) and you're done. You now have a rooted tablet with ClockworkMod recovery!
As always, if you hit any snags, hit this thread on RootzWiki. Good luck!

Looking for Devs [Pantech Burst p9070]

Google code site

Burst Rom Porting  (Stop by and let yourself known and we can also add your to the google code list)

Pantech Burst Love (Largest Pantech Burst related thread on XDA where we have mostly gathered to meet)

Burst's Development IRC chat

We are always looking for new devs.  I figure the more people we have working the faster we can get some custom roms running as well as different offshoots so there will be choices.  Biggest hurdle will be porting CM9/10 once we get the ICS kernel source after the update releases.

Also anyone who can open the update file up and modify it if needed if they decided to try and lock the bootloader and or break root.

March Att announcement for ICS update

Looks like the HTC Vivid isn't the only AT&T phone getting the Ice Cream Sandwich treatment.
The carrier announced today a number of other devices that will be eligible for the Android 4.0 update in the next few months.
Again, it will be a couple of months until the update rolls out, but we're excited. As hot as ICS is, it's only featured in a few devices, like the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. The only thing more exciting than reading this list is actually owning one of the devices mentioned. So for anyone who has these products currently, are you as pleased as we are?

So we've known for a long while the update is coming just no idea when.
Hopefully with the statement and the teaser photo from Pantech USA's Facebook page they posted yesterday we will hear something within the week.

Possible Pantech Burst ICS announcement?

The following was posted on the Pantech USA Facebook page (could it be????):

A major announcement is coming this Friday! Meanwhile, here are Team Pantech athletes Bucky Lasek & Mitchie Brusco taking a break from their Pantech commercial shoot eating their favorite treat...

Google Play Legacy

[Modaco Legacy Play]

O'Brien was able to retrieve an old version of the Play Store client and hack around to make it run alongside the official Play Store. In the Legacy Play Store your My Apps screen will again have a handy list of all your paid apps that are not installed on the device. The current version of the Play Store has a tab for all your apps. That's nice, but if you try a lot of free apps, you'll be scrolling for ages just to find the handful of paid apps you want on your device.
You can download the APK  at the link above. On pre-Jelly Bean devices it can usually be installed normally. On Jelly Bean and some more temperamental phones with older software, you have to push the installer to /system/app and chmod it to 644. If you have to go this route, root is needed. Is this maybe a little extreme just to return that one feature? Nope. It was insane for Google to remove that in the first place.

Oh, you probably also want to turn off the update notifications in this version or you'll get duplicates!
